Sorry you lost these songs

Regrettably, the tools which the iTunes Store Customer Support Team uses simply does not allow us access to the names of the artists for those items, nor does it allow us the ability to view which media format those items are in. It simply provides us with the titles of the items which we weren't able to restore for you.

CNN|WTF: American Morning
The Size of Things
The Transcripts

This is posted on CNN's website as the actual transcript from this morning's "how big is yours, Rob?" banter with co-hosts John Roberts and Kiren Chetry, with Jason Carroll (technology) and Rob Marciano (weather):

CARROLL: Well, data from this morning's mission should come into scientists almost instantly, but the mission's manager, Daniel Andrews, tells me it could take weeks to analyze it. So in other words, it could be a while before we know if there is more water there on the moon.

But you know what's exciting about this, amateur astronomers can get involved because if you have a telescope at home, 10 to 12 inches or so, you should be -- depending upon if you're in the right position -- you know what? Your mind.

CHETRY: No, I'm just saying, who has a 10 to 12-inch telescope sitting at home? Jason does, right?

CARROLL: My mom used to have one. I had one as a kid. You know, some people out there might. Not all.

CHETRY: I have bird-watching binoculars. Will that help in any way, shape or form?

ROBERTS: Let's check in with Rob Marciano. He likes all this. How big is yours, Rob?

CARROLL: Thank you.

MARCIANO: I don't know where you -- I don't know why you're giggling. I don't why you're laughing. This is serious, serious business.

CARROLL: Thank you.

MARCIANO: If you have a backyard telescope that big, God bless you.

Hey CNN: Where's Miles?

Your Money: Prepaid Debit Cards. Free?
The New York Times

Published: October 5, 2009

Buying a prepaid debit card these days is just about as easy as picking up a bottle of shampoo or a candy bar. Walk into a Wal-Mart or almost any major drugstore, and rows of plastic worth $25, $100 and even $500 beckon from kiosks alongside prepaid phone cards and gift cards for retailers.

The National Equality March, Washington DC.
So what's it all about, anyway?

The right to get married in a civil ceremony
and to have that union federally recognized.

The right to serve openly in the military.

The right to be free from
prejudice and harassment in the workplace.

The right to not be bullied in school
because of your orientation or perceived gender identity.

CNN Presents: Passing in America.
Black v Latino v White.

Don't get me wrong. I love Soledad. I STILL think she and the Mr (Miles O'Brien) got the shaft for a Canadian and a whatever. But c'mon. Soledad!

You can PASS!

You can PASS for a white woman. And that's exactly what you look like in your CNN promo photo. But you LOOK Latina (sorry, I lived in Miami for 11 years) on the cover of your book. Where was the "companion book" for BLACK IN AMERICA? What would you have done for the cover photo on that tome? Cornrows? Afro?

Just like the supposed separation of church and state, I'm wondering if CNN is in the book publishing business lately. Jack's got a new one. I think I heard Wolf say something. I know your LATINO counterpart Sr Sanchez has been hawking other colleagues' books, especially when he's not hawking "las fotos de la dia."

It's about passing, sister.

Passing for white. Passing for black. Passing for Latino, or Hispanic, or Latina, or Jewish, or a non-immigrant...

or passing for straight and abled.

Passing in America.

Since these series seem to take you about one and one-half years, I guess we'll see PASSING IN AMERICA towards 2011.

It'll give you plenty of time to find a ghost writer too.

Gay Marriage Bill Introduced in D.C.

from The NYTimes online:

Published: October 6, 2009

WASHINGTON — City Council members introduced legislation Tuesday to allow same-sex marriage here. If it passes, as expected, Washington would be the first city below the Mason-Dixon line to allow such unions. The city’s bill is expected to become law by December.

But the measure is likely to draw harsh criticism from Congressional Republicans and conservative Democrats, many of whom face mid-term elections next year, and they could act to overturn it.

After Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, who supports the measure, signs it, Congress has 30 days to enact a joint resolution of disapproval.

President Obama would have to sign that resolution for the city law to be blocked.

I remember I adopted you from NEW BEGINNINGS in Dania FL on 07 April 1997, and you passed in Cheshire CT on 06 October 2003, one month shy of turning ten years old. Osteosarcoma. No doubt brought on by doping.

You ran a good race, Grace.

House of Dark Shadows is the theatrical-feature spin-off of the popular 1960s TV "Gothic" serial Dark Shadows. Jonathan Frid is on hand again as 150-year-old vampire Barnabas Collins, once again going about his business in the spectre-filled Collinswood mansion. Another carryover from the TV series, Carolyn Stoddard (Nancy Barrett), finds her blood supply depleted by the elusive Mr. Collins. When Carolyn dies, it isn't long before she's wandering the hallways as one of the "undead". Barnabas persists in his bloodsucking activities until he makes the error of falling in love with mistress-of-the-house Maggie Evans (Kathryn Leigh Scott).

Night of Dark Shadows is the second full-length motion picture feature based on the popular television soap-opera/horror melodrama Dark Shadows. The first film was House of Dark Shadows. This film lacks the grand guignol glee provided by Jonathan Frid and Joan Bennet. However, it has a new storyline, not a rehash of one previously explored in the television series. Here, artist Charles Collins (David Selby, who performed the same part in the TV series) brings his new bride to live in the family mansion, which he has just inherited. The gentle and sensitive young Collins, the last of his clan, has troubled sleep. He dreams of the past, of his family, and of the house. Perhaps his dreams are not just dreams? Increasingly deranged by these visions, it begins to look like he will re-enact the atrocities committed by his family in the past. It is interesting to note that the film uses the mansion of 1890s railroad robber/baron Jay Gould for its setting.

"La Negra"
Sra. Mercedes Sosa
Gracias a la Vida (Live)

October 4, 2009
Mercedes Sosa, Argentine Folk Singer, Is Dead at 74

The accompanying version of GRACIAS A LA VIDA is from TRANCE PLANET, Volume 1 (1994). Allegedly, this live version of what is Sra. Sosa's signature song was recorded when she performed for the first time after returning to her homeland, Argentina, from Paris, where she remained in exile for years due to the military climate. With the power of the junta on the decline, she made the decision to perform live despite the threats to her life.

I lived in Miami for eleven years, and I can say, without a doubt, that Miami forever changed me musically, opening my mind, soul, heart and ears to the music of other cultures, sung in other languages. I always wondered how non-native English speakers felt when they heard a song sung in English, and if they felt the same emotion I felt.

With this song, this voice, this version, this woman, I know you don't have to know the meaning of the words to be moved by the emotion of a song, sung from the heart by a powerful voice.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Argentine folk singer Mercedes Sosa, the ''voice of Latin America'' whose music inspired opponents of South America's brutal military regimes and led to her forced exile in Europe, died Sunday, her family said. She was 74.

Her remains lay in state at the National Congress, where thousands of people -- many with flowers or Argentine flags -- lined up to pay respects to one of the region's most iconic voices.

''She was the best ambassador the country ever had,'' said Clara Suarez, 63, holding a bouquet of white flowers outside the Congress.

Sosa was best known for signature tunes such as ''Gracias a la Vida'' (''Thanks to Life'') and ''Si se Calla el Cantor'' (''If the Singer is Silenced''). She had been in the hospital for more than two weeks with liver problems and had since been suffering from progressive kidney failure and cardiac arrest.

Her latest album, ''Cantora 1,'' is nominated for three prizes in next month's Latin Grammy awards in Las Vegas, including album of the year and best folkloric album.

Affectionately dubbed ''La Negra'' or ''The Black One'' by fans for her mixed Indian and distant French ancestry, Sosa was born July 9, 1935, to a poor, working-class family in the sugarcane country of northwest Tucuman province.

Early on she felt the allure of popular traditions and became a teacher of folkloric dance.

At the age of 15, friends impressed by her talent encouraged Sosa to enter a local radio contest under the pseudonym ''Gladys Osorio.'' She won a two-month contract with the broadcaster -- the first of many accolades over a career that continued until her final days.

''I didn't choose to sing for people,'' Sosa said in a recent interview on Argentine television. ''Life chose me to sing.''

graba noche y dia grillos y canarios
martillos, turbinas, ladridos, chubascos
y la voz tan tierna de mi bien amado.

Gracias a la Vida que me ha dado tanto
me ha dado el sonido y el abedecedario
con él las palabras que pienso y declaro
madre amigo hermano y luz alumbrando,

Mercedes Sosa - Thanks to life (Violeta Parra)

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me two beams of light, that when opened,
Can perfectly distinguish black from white
And in the sky above, her starry backdrop,
And from within the multitude
The one that I love.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me an ear that, in all of its width
Records— night and day—crickets and canaries,
Hammers and turbines and bricks and storms,
And the tender voice of my beloved.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me sound and the alphabet.
With them the words that I think and declare:
"Mother," "Friend," "Brother" and the light shining.
The route of the soul from which comes love.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the ability to walk with my tired feet.
With them I have traversed cities and puddles
Valleys and deserts, mountains and plains.
And your house, your street and your patio.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me a heart, that causes my frame to shudder,
When I see the fruit of the human brain,
When I see good so far from bad,
When I see within the clarity of your eyes...

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me laughter and it gave me longing.
With them I distinguish happiness and pain—
The two materials from which my songs are formed,
And your song, as well, which is the same song.
And everyone's song, which is my very song.

Thanks to life

Mercedes Sosa, 74, dies
"Voice of Latin America"

(CNN) -- Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa, known as "the voice of Latin America" for her songs about the plight of the poor, died Sunday, according to an announcement on her Web site. She was 74.

"On this day, in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, we must inform you that Mrs. Mercedes Sosa, one of the greatest artists of Latin American popular music, has left us," the Web site said.

Sosa died at a Buenos Aires clinic, and had suffered from liver, kidney and heart ailments, the Washington Post reported.

Born on July 9, 1935, in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina, Sosa produced 40 albums during her musical career, and performed at places such as the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican and New York's Carnegie Hall. She also served as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador for Latin America.

"Her voice always carried a profound message of social engagement through folk-roots music, without prejudice," according to the Web site.

She formed part of the New Song movement in Latin America, which combined folk song traditions with contemporary music that often featured political messages in its lyrics.

When a military junta took over Argentina in 1976, many of her albums were banned, and Sosa left in exile to Paris, France, and Madrid, Spain. She returned to her homeland in 1982.

Sosa won various Latin Grammy awards. Her most recent nomination came last year for her latest album, "Cantora 1."

She was known throughout Latin America and Europe, with one of her most popular songs titled "Gracias a la Vida," the Web site said.

"Her undeniable talent, her honesty and her deep convictions left a tremendous legacy for future generations. Admired and respected throughout the world, Mercedes is recognized as a symbol of our cultural heritage that will represent us forever," the Web site said.

"She lived her 74 years to the fullest," Sosa's son, Fabian Matus, said. "She had done practically everything she wanted, she didn't have any type of barrier or any type of fear that limited her."

A viewing was to be held Sunday afternoon at the Salon de los Pasos Perdidos in the Congress of the Nation in Buenos Aires, according to Sosa's Web site.
