27 years ago Monday
[I might forget to post!]

Ten years ago this very day...

Alice Ghostly

Six Degrees
Meryl Streep

I had to bitch about taking my break one Sunday afternoon spent folding sweaters in between selling golfclubs. It was either Trish or Grace who caved in (Dan, maybe?) and, finally! I was cut loose for an early dinner.

I understand I was barely out the door, and Mrs Donald Gummer walked in. She made several purchases, requiring one signature across the franked paper.

Didn't leave home without it, she.
Mrs Donald S Gummer

Happy birthday, Mrs G!

I'd remember the day, had I met you.
I certainly don't remember the lunch.

Reynolds, let me give you a tip:
the tie? gotta go! Light blue stripes? Huh? What WERE you thinking?

Try dark green, black in some fashion, or even a dark blue.

Nice try!

Oh. And can we talk about this photo of you?
The angle makes you appear to be losing your hair,

Didn't someone think to work out those wrinkles?

Not good.

Give me a call. I'll take care of you.

Word of the Day

No explanation needed.

(Too fucking funny!)

Must-see TV!

Asleep at the wheel.

Black White + Gray examines the symbiotic relationship between wealthy, influential curator and collector Sam Wagstaff and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in New York during the heady years of the 1970s and 1980s. The film is said to look intensively at Mapplethorpe’s intimate relationship with Wagstaff, and his rapid ascendancy in the art world with Wagstaff’s forceful patronage and guidance. At the time their romance began, Mapplethorpe was 26 years old, twenty five years younger than Wagstaff, and leaving the loft apartment he shared with Patti Smith near the Chelsea Hotel on 23rd Street. Each man sought out the other, and they would remain connected forever. The film explores the strong bond of friendship both men shared with Smith in this period, also marked by Smith’s first recording triumph, “Horses,” her debut album from 1975. Wagstaff, Mapplethorpe and Smith were at the center of scenes variously characterized by raucous “happenings,” the Warhol Factory and notorious hangouts like Max’s Kansas City in the West Village. The period was colored by club life, the emergence of punk rock at CBGBs, Studio 54 and darker corners of lower Manhattan, like the Meat Packing District and the Chelsea Piers, where a teeming gay underworld was thriving.

The film shows Wagstaff secretively transcending these various social strata, while Smith and Mapplethorpe rapidly edged toward notoriety and infamy with their respective works.
