Paul Hardcastle

Paul Hardcastle has put together an impressive career as a producer with his own Fast Forward record label, and as a composer scoring video and film works. He also enjoyed a brief period of pop fame, when in 1985 he had a surprise number 1 hit (UK) with "19."
"19" was an interesting combination of preachy spoken word, testimonials, looping news reports, synths and heavy beats, concerning a subject that dominated music two decades earlier: the Vietnam War. The number nineteen was significant in the song as the reported "average age" of the combat soldier during the conflict. While those of us who were of high school age (or there-abouts) at the time were not terribly concerned with the political fallout that surrounded the Vietnam war, there was so little popular music with socio-political messages in 1985 that we really latched on to it. Plus for some reason it felt really cool to repeat the line "I wasn't really sure what was going on."

In 1965 Vietnam seemed like just another foreign war,
but it wasn't.
It was different in many ways, as so were those that did the fighting.
In World War II the average age of the combat soldier was 26...
In Vietnam he was 19.
In inininininin Vietnam he was 19.

In Vietnam the combat soldier typically served a twelve month tour of duty
but was exposed to hostile fire almost everyday

Hundreds of Thousands of men who saw heavy combat in Vietnam were arrested
since discharge Their arrest rate is almost twice that of non-veterans of the same
age. There are no accurate figures of how many of these men have been incarcerated.
But, a Veterans Administration study concludes that the greater of Vets exposure
to combat could more likely affect his chances of being arrested or convicted.

This is one legacy of the Vietnam War

Perhaps the most dramatic difference between World War II and Vietnam was
coming home.. .none of them received a hero's welcome

According to a Veteran's Administration study

Some succumb to suicidal thoughts

When we came back it was different.. Everybody wants to know "How'd it

There's gotta be something wrong somewhere
We did what we had to do
There's gotta be something wrong somewhere
People wanted us to be ashamed of what it made us
Dad had no idea what he went to fight and he is now
All we want to do is come home

What did we do it for
All we want to do is come home
Was it worth it?

The last Friday of 2006.
Happy our?

Open your hand. Good.
Now, drink the water that remains in it.

Air Earth Fire Water

Throw him to the wild boars...

I don't know, but however barbaric this sounds, I say hanging this SOB is prolly too much of a good thing. While a public stoning and stockades and torture all have their validities here, putting this motherfucker on an island (hello? Lord of the Flies?) with a few other select criminals (ummm, Scott Peterson, starters) and let them fend for themselves.

Look at the long miserable lives of the starving and suffering faces of those people in Africa, and you tell me what's humane?

Shooting them in the head? or letting Saddam rot in their desserts, or some boar-ridden Pacific island.

One thing for certain:

a quick death is a hero's death.

Slow and painful, let him fucking live.
Dump him somewhere, and let him fend for himself.
Make his prison days seem worthy of the Helmsley or Trump Towers.

Well, then again...

Subject: Carrots, Eggs, and Coffee...

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never
look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things
were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and
wanted to give up She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one
problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water
and placed each on a high fire Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she
placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed
ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots
out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a

Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her
daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and
noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg
and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter
smiled as she tasted its rich aroma The daughter then asked, "What does it
mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same
adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being
subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had
been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but
after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened The
ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling
water, they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on
your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain
and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat?
Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial
hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff?
Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a
stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the
very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases
the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their
worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you
elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity?

Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to
make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they
just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go
forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.

Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone
around you is crying.

Somewhere, a soldier is out there...

Who, in God knows how short a period of time, will be a household name, or "media darling" for being the 3,000th fatality of the Iraq war.

Some poor family, to be determined, will have to deal with the onslaught of media vultures all over their doorstep, because their son/daughter became the 3,000th fatality.

I'm sure it'll be a white male.
Well, at least as far as what will be portrayed in said media.

What're the odds it'll be a less-acceptable-to-the-mainstream "minority female?"
Probably good to better than that.

But the media would never make and laud a double-minority as a representative milestone of the Iraq war.

I'm not cynical.

I'm sad.

What I don't get is that I'll never understand how I escaped the battle of HIV which cut down so many in their prime, some 20 years ago.

And I'm sure there's a soldier who, in their last moments (if they even had a last moment to think consciously), wonders:

I just say:

Wednesday, December 27, 2006

"An extremely quiet child" they called you in your school report
"He's always taken interest in the subjects that he's taught"
So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your drive
To notify your parents of the manner in which you died

At St. Patricks every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins
"Oh, he's unconcerned with competition he never cares to win"
But blood stained a young hand that never held a gun
And his parents never thought of him as their troubled son

"Now you'll never get to Heaven" Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Grow up straight and true blue
Run along to bed"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

They had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priest
Some gook said "His brain's just snapped" then someone called the police
You'd knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you down
Oh you'd pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the ground

Promising to hurt no one, providing they were still
A young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killed
That gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palm
Oh your childhood cried out in your head "they mean to do you harm"

"Don't ever ride on the devil's knee" Mama said
Remember mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Pay your penance well, my child
Fear where angels tread"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

Within an hour the news had reached the media machine
A male caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in Queens
The area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from school
Fourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking Mule

Oh they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside
"Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high"
But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the door
Oh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law

"You've slept too long in silence" Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Crazy boy, you'll only wind up with strange notions in your head"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

Funny how love is everywhere just look and see
Funny how love is anywhere you're bound to be
Funny how love is every song in every key
Funny how love is coming home in time for tea
Funny, funny, funny, oh

Funny how love is the end of lies when the truth begins
(da da daa, da da daa, da da daa, dah dah)
Tomorrow comes tomorrow brings
Tomorrow brings love in the shape of things
(aah aah aah aah aah aah)
That's what love is, that's what love is
Funny how love can break your heart so suddenly
Funny how love came tumbling down with Adam and Eve
Funny how love is running wild and feeling free
Funny how love is coming home in time for tea
Funny, funny, funny
(da da daa, da da daa, da da daa, duh dooh)
From the earth below to the heavens above
That's how far and funny is love
(da da daa, da da daa, da da daa, dah dah)
At any time (any time), anywhere (anywhere)
If you gotta make love do it everywhere
(aah aah aah aah aah aah)
That's what love is, that's what love is
Funny how love is everywhere just look and see (duh duh)
Funny how love is anywhere you're bound to be (dah dah)
Funny how love is every song in every key
Funny how love is when you gotta hurry home 'cos you're late for tea

Hey George:

I'm sure the next 20 are going to be easy for you.
After all, the 3,000 dead service men and women in Iraq will be eclipsed with the "all Gerry Ford, all the time" television, and the services for the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. So, you kinda got off lucky here, with 2006 ENDING with over 3,000 dead.

What's your legacy going to be?

Emotional display

This influence brings professional and business concerns into focus, but in a way that will test you. Your most intimate and personal life is on public display more than usual now, and you may find it difficult to hide certain facts about yourself. Obviously you are best off if you have nothing to hide. Even if you usually have reservations about emotional display in public, you are likely to indulge in such displays now. For example, you might have a public argument with a loved one or partner, or you might have a public outburst of good emotions. Perhaps you will want to help someone whom you know through your job and make the relationship something more than professional. But if it is to your disadvantage to blur the distinction between business and personal relationships, be careful, because you will tend to do this.

Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
2 get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here 2 tell u
There's something else
The afterworld

A world of never ending happiness
U can always see the sun, day or night

So when u call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
U know the one - Dr Everything'll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

'Cuz in this life
Things are much harder than in the afterworld
In this life
You're on your own

And if de-elevator tries 2 bring u down
Go crazy - punch a higher floor

from the Latin > sto, stare, steti, statum

What I wouldn't give to stare into these eyes for eternity...

They said: "there'll be snow at Christmas"
They said: "there'll be peace on earth."
But, instead, it just kept on raining,
a veil of tears for the virgin's birth.
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter's light and a distant choir,
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas-tree smell,
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire.
They sold me a dream of Christmas;
They sold me a Silent Night
And they told me a fairy story,
'til I believed in the Israelites.
And I believed in Father Christmas
And I looked at the sky with excited eyes
'til I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn,
And I saw him, and through his disguise.
I wish you a hopeful Christmas.
I wish you a brave new year.
All anguish pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear.
