Torrington: Teacher files suit

A Torrington Middle School music teacher who was cleared of accusations that he had pornography on a classroom computer has filed a lawsuit against the Board of Education and former middle school Principal John Hudson for personal damages.

Matthew Valenti is president of the Torrington Education Association and now runs the string instruments program at the middle school and Torringford and East elementary schools. He said he has planned to file this lawsuit since his two classroom computers were confiscated and investigated in 2004.

The lawsuit was filed Feb. 16 in U.S. District Court in Hartford.

"I want closure and I want to be compensated for the damage that was done to me in a professional capacity and in my personal life," Valenti said Thursday. "My reputation was stellar in this town."

Board Chairman Paul Cavagnero said he could not comment. Hudson, now principal at Austin High School in Austin, Texas, did not return a message left at his office.

A 29-year veteran teacher in the Torrington school system, Valenti has been president of the teachers union for seven years.

He is asking for an unspecified amount of financial compensation for emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life, as well as attorneys' fees and other legal costs, according to the complaint.

In November 2004, Hudson confiscated two computers, including one owned by the teachers union, from Valenti's classroom. Shortly after, Valenti was placed on paid administrative leave. The lawsuit claims he later refused an ultimatum from the Board of Education that if he did not resign, the board would take the issue to police.

The issue was taken to police in December 2004. Valenti was cleared in August 2005 after police found no evidence of pornography on either computer. Valenti claims Hudson confiscated the computers partially in retaliation for his speaking out as the union's president.

A court date has not been set.

The music was as good as, if not better (or more interesting) than TOKYO Project.
Silly me, thinking that Madonna was "out of sync" with the rest of the evening, but then again, for someone who's been on a dance floor since before Madonna (try 1975!!!) I'd forgotten there was more to dm than mindless noise these days.
